Women are primarily responsible for new life, and since it is their body that must go through these changes, it is understandable that many women prefer to wait awhile to have children. Some have goals to pursue while others just feel they aren’t quite ready for children yet. In order to put off having children, a woman is going to have to choose some method of birth control. One type of birth control that is a popular choice among women is a shot for birth control.
The shot that is given for birth control is known as Depo-Provera. Of course, there are several other names that this birth control shot is known as too. Some call it DMPA and others just refer to it as “the shot.” This shot has to be given four times each year if you want to be sure that you prevent pregnancy.
Progestin, which is a hormone, is what is actually found in this birth control shot. You will have to go to your doctor in order to get the dosage that you need. The right dose can prevent you from getting pregnancy; however, the dose has to be given to you every three months.
The birth control shot containing progestin actually keeps the sperm from fertilizing the egg, which could be in the uterus or the fallopian tubes.
Usually you will find that the birth control shot is administered by the doctor in either your upper arm or in the buttocks. One great thing about this type of birth control is that you don’t have to worry about taking pills every day. The birth control shot actually replaces the pills so you won’t have to take them while you are getting the shots.
There are some side effects that come along with the birth control shot that you should know about. You need to be aware that just getting the birth control shot is not going to prevent you from any sexually transmitted diseases. This is important; however, it is not the only side effect.
Some of the other side effects include, menstrual changes, loss of hair, tenderness in the breasts, light periods, depression, or even heavy periods. Both breast cancer and cervical cancer risks can be elevated if you take the birth control shot.
Thought the side effects have the potential to be quite severe and bothersome, there are still many women who prefer this method of birth control. Most women believe that getting the shot is actually more effective for them than other methods of birth control that are out there.
